I've been a reader for most of my life... I really don't remember a time before books made up a huge part of who I am as a person. And there are a few, distinct moments in the lives of every reader that you never forget...
The first time you really fell into a book.
The first time you literally couldn't think of anything but getting back into the world the author created.
The first time a book unexpectedly taught you about yourself.
The first time you discovered that a feeling you thought particular to you is actually a universal human emotion.
And today I finished the book that made me feel like I had never read a book before this very moment.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. I seriously feel like my brain has been cracked open and all of these possibilities about what you can do with the written word were just poured in.
I don't even know what to do with myself right now.
Seriously, if you haven't yet... read it.
Description:
Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who--from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister--dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fuku--a curse that has haunted Oscar's family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA. Encapsulating Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao opens our eyes to an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere--and risk it all--in the name of love.
