Happy Birthday, Robert Louis Stevenson!

Did you know?

  • The Royal Bank of Scotland issued a £1 banknote featuring Stevenson's likeness in 1994

  • When first published as a serial in Young Folks magazine, Treasure Island was titled The Sea Cook courtesy of mental_floss

  • RLS was a teenager once too, and like any teenager... he routinely asked his parents for money. Here is how he did it:

“Every year I have cost you an enormous — nay, elephantine — sum

of money for drugs and physician’s fees, and the most expensive time

of the twelve months was March,” Stevenson writes. “But this year

the biting Oriental blasts, the howling tempests, and the general ailments

of the human race have been successfully braved by yours truly. Does not

this deserve remuneration?” courtesy of Letters of Note

And most relevant to today...

  • At 41 years old, Stevenson gave his birthday away to a young girl named Annie, who was bummed that she shared a birthday with Jesus. He had a legal document, complete with conditions, drawn up to make the switch official-like. So I guess this entire post is moo ("Like a cow's opinion, it doesn't matter." First person to guess what that's from gets my love and respect.)
